Subteams

Aerospace Engineering

Manufacturing Team

Builds the upper solar cell wing skins of the fixed-wing aircraft. Assists other sub-teams in assembly of aircraft components.

Structures Team

Designs, constructs, and modifies the fixed-wing airframe. Includes the wing spars, wing ribs, fuselage, and control surfaces.

CAD Team

Models components of the aircraft using 3D design software such as Solidworks. Create virtual prototypes to be followed for physical construction.

Aerodynamics Team

Conducts computational fluid dynamic analysis on the airframe using software such as ANSYS.

Flight and Data Team

Schedules flight tests with a resident UAV pilot and creates flight plans for each test.

Systems Team

Integrates and facilitates communications between each sub-team. Responsible for assisting the project manager in tracking the budget, schedule, inventory, requirements, and risks & mitigations. (ECE and ARO)

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Battery Team

Testing of experimental structural batteries and supercapacitors to be implemented into the airframe. Will replace the wing spars and landing gear with these structural batteries.

Communications Team

Creates both hardware and software to allow for rapid data offloading from the UAV, ground/obstacle detection, and autonomous flight.

Robotics Team

Designs and constructs an autonomous ground station to replace the UAV’s batteries when depleted. Also implements induction coils for wireless charging during battery replacement.

Powerline Induction Team

Designs a lower wing skin for the aircraft to allow it to wirelessly recharge when overflying powerlines. Builds prototypes and tests in the field.

Power Management Team

Creates the UAV’s on-board power management hardware. Monitors power inputs and outputs and routes power efficiently through the drone in-flight.
